I have not started my crochet market bag yet, but now that my CEU's for my nursing license are done I can concentrate on some other things. I really need to just do a few of them a month, and I won't get stuck doing them all at the end. Good grief!

Peridot the August Birthstone
I know I am going out of order, I think I left off with Aquamarine, so way out of order, lol. But, Peridot is the birthstone for August, and my birthstone, so I have to post about it now. To view some beautiful Peridot jewelry, visit my Etsy store, by clicking the Etsy mini on the left hand side of this blog. The first video, is just some of the most beautiful specimens of Peridot. The second video talks about the healing powers of Peridot, and the last video which I still have to watch, looks awesome. It tells how to test your Peridot, to see if it is the real thing, by using magnetism. Cool! I also think this would be an awesome Science experiment for my two homeschooled children, oh yeah! Enjoy!

Lovely Sterling Silver Green Peridot Ring
I finally got to make some new jewelry pieces, with traditional settings, and gemstones from my personal collection. I love Peridot! It is my birthstone, and in the lime green, that looks like fresh grass, is my favorite hue. Peridot can have more yellow undertones, and it can also be bland and blah. I love vibrant, bright, beautiful Peridot. The ring below is sterling silver, and this ring is made well with a thick silver band. It is a size 7, and I would wear it as an engagement ring. You can view it in my Etsy store, along with my other awesome items, of course.
Aquamarine is the birthstone for March, and I hope to get some info up soon about this beautiful gemstone. I do have blue gemstones, in my collection, and some jewelry, but I am not positive they are Aquamarine.

Did You Know There Is Peridot In Arizona?
Now don't go running to Arizona to mine for some. It is on protected Native American land. Beautiful, lime green, big pieces of Peridot come out of the ground here. Peridot is the birthstone for August. It is also my birthstone, and I love it. The video below is not all that exciting, but wait until you see the huge Peridot piece found at the end of the video.

Peridot The August Birthstone
Cleopatra was a huge fan of Peridot. She had many exotic pieces of jewelry with it. She thought it was Emeralds though LOL, but it has been shown it was in fact Peridot. Peridot can be quite ugly, to be frank, but there is gem quality Peridot out there, and it is relatively inexpensive compared to Emeralds. These pieces are exceptionally clean with lovely color.
Peridot is a 6 1/2-7 on the Moh's hardness scale, and is very brittle internally. That means it can chip, and crack easily, especially when setting the stone in jewelry. Peridot can be found in Arizona, Australia, Brazil, China, Kenya, Mexico, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tanzania, and Norway. Some Peridot have a lily pad inclusion, and can be visible with a 10x loupe. This inclusion actually will increase the value of your Peridot. Peridot can resemble many gemstones, on the market. There is both synthetic, and simulant Peridot available. Peridot is a completely natural gemstone requiring no treatments. I have never personally seen these, but there is Star Peridot, as well as Cat's Eye Peridot.

Carnelian The Alternative Birthstone For August Babies
This ring, is either, a Carnelian cabachon, Mexican Fire Opal, Mandarin Garnet, or Red Agate. It was made by myself, and the gemstone is genuine, though unidentified.
I am an August baby, and I already made a post about Peridot. I love Peridot. If you have never experienced gem quality Peridot, than you no doubt are not a big fan of Peridot. In the commercial markets, it is dull, lifeless, and very often included. But all you August babies, there is gem quality Peridot out there, and it is stunning.
The alternative birthstone, for August is Carnelian. Carnelian is also an alternative birthstone for the Zodiac Sign Virgo. Carnelian is a member of the Chalcedony family, and is a hot red color, in its finest form. It is usually heat treated, to get this red hot color, and is extremely hard to find in its natural form. They are always cabachon cut, or that I have seen. I have several, loose stones, that I think are Carnelian but have not had them tested.
It has a hardness, of 6 1/2 to 7, on the Mohs Hardness Scale, which makes it suitable for jewelry. It is advised, to set with care, and wear with care, as 6 1/2 does not make it the toughest gemstone on the market. Pendants, and Earrings, would probably be the better options.
When held against the light, Carnelian's color variety will show stripes. Natural Carnelian, shows a cloudy distribution of color.
Carnelian was used to protect the traveler after death and guard against evil. Carnelian's healing properties are thought to help purify the blood, relieve menstrual cramps and back pain. It is also thought to be beneficial in the treatment of infertility and is worn to enhance passion and desire.

Peridot the Birthstone for August babies
Peridot, also called Chrysolite and Olivine, is the birthstone for August babies. It can range in color from yellow-green, to green-yellow, olive green, and some brownish in color which are not optimal. Peridot of the nicer varieties are found in Arizona in the USA, China, Burma and Pakistan. Peridot has been found with a cats eye effect, and star asterism. It is extremely rare, in those varieties, and I have never seen any either in a book, or in person. It is a doubly refractive gemstone, and some have a lily pad inclusion. It has a Mohs hardness of 6 1/2-7 and can be very brittle. Care must be taken when setting Peridot, due to its brittleness, and when wearing to avoid knicking and chipping the stone. Alot of Peridot, sold in the stores is not the lovelier quality, therefore many August babies do not like their gemstone. However, there is gem quality Peridot available, and it is quite lovely. If you look at my pictures posted, you will see what I mean. Peridot is said to be running out, and is making the stone more rare and thereby more valuable. Get your Peridot, before it runs out. I personally prefer sterling silver, but Peridot is quite lovely when set in yellow gold.
