Pink Zircon and Ruby Ring

This is a lovely sterling silver ring, size 6, featuring a lovely pink gemstone. Now I can not say for sure what it is, but there are not many pink gemstones out there. It could be pink sapphire, pink zircon, pink spinel, or pink topaz. I am figuring it is probably pink zircon, as it came in a parcel, and is the most likely to be that. It is a real gemstone, whatever it is, and not a simulant or synthetic. If you look at the picture you will see that there are tiny rubies, embedded into the shoulders of the rings, these are on both sides, adding a lovely design to the ring. Prasiolite and Red Sapphire Ring

Prasiolite, sometimes called Green Amethyst, is a member of the quartz family, and is created by heat treating very pale purple Amethyst. It is a soft, minty green color. Like all quartz it is a durable gemstone. This lovely ring is sterling silver, size 6, featuring a 8mmx6mm emerald cut Prasiolite gemstone, with two red sapphire accent stones on the shoulders. Emerald and Red Sapphire Ring

This lovely ring is sterling silver, featuring a 3.5mm round Emerald gemstone, as the center stone. Then the sapphires surrounding the emerald are a intense cherry red color. These sapphires most definitely have been treated, as I have never seen red sapphires of this intense red color. It is a size 6, and is available for sale for 39.99 in my Etsy store. Star Sapphire Real, or Treated

Sapphire, one of the most precious gemstones in the world. It has a hardness of 9, making it extremely durable. Most sapphires are treated in some way. Either through heat treatment, diffusion, or other accepted treatments. Star sapphires are a phenomenon gemstone. The star is actually an inclusion, formed by rutile needles which when aligned will form a six ray star. The way the stone is cut, is important to centering the star. There are manmade star sapphires namely Linde Star Sapphires. This star sapphire was sold to me as a loose gemstone, and was sold to me as a natural gemstone, meaning no treatment. The picture was taken under a good light source, so the star can be clearly seen. Under poor lighting, or other than natural light sources, the star looks washed out, and difficult to see. It has good movement, and is not just fixed to center of the stone. It does have very straight legs, which may be suspicious to treatment. I set it in a sterling silver filigree design setting. It is a size 6. I actually have two of these, one I kept for myself. I kept my price reasonably low, in case it is not natural as advertised to me. Even a synthetic star sapphire has value, and is beautiful, and appealing on the hand. If the star has a four legged ray, it is most likely a Star Diopside, not a star sapphire, a collectible, and valuable stone in its own right. Sapphire Virtual Tour Of Mine In Australia

Sapphire is the birthstone, for the month of September. Sapphires are some of the most beautiful, and expensive gemstones to man. Known as one of the precious gemstones, it has a hardness of 9, and is the original gemstone given for engagement, before diamonds became marketed as such. I will be dedicating the month of September to this amazing gemstone, starting with a virtual tour of a sapphire gemstone mine. It is short, but interesting.

Kyanite The Blueberry Blue Gemstone

I have actually blogged about Kyanite before, mostly whining about how I don't own any LOL. Kyanite in its finest form is a beautiful blueberry blue color. It can be very expensive, and in loose form, I never seem to be able to get any. Ha, then I came upon this ring. HSN was selling this lovely Kyanite ring, and I just had to have it. I had to save my pennies, and hope it didn't sell out, it was on clearance. It is actually over 3 carats in weight, and a bit larger than I am accustomed to wearing. I have been wearing it all week, and it is quite comfortable. Kyanite is a very difficult gemstone for a lapidary to cut because it actually is variable in its hardness, and cleavage. Kyanite can have a hardness anywhere from 4-7 depending on how it is cut. It can also be found in a soft blue, with hint of violet tone of color. Due to its lack of hardness being set in a bezel setting is optimum, especially for me. I am hard on my jewelry, and this setting will largely protect the stone. Though I did not make this piece, one of the reasons I started making my own jewelry, was the expense of buying already made pieces. Due to the harsh conditions I put my jewelry under, I can not see spending a fortune on it, yet love lovely jewelry. When I sell my pieces, it is my ultimate goal, to make lovely jewelry, at lovely prices. It is not really a business for me, but more of a sharing experience. How To Set Gemstones In A Non Snaptite Setting

If you go back in my archives, you will see the video that showed you how to set gemstones into a snaptite setting. Snaptite are by far the easiest to set stones in. Now you can learn how to set them into traditional prong setttings. The first gemstone setting tool, is rather expensive, but nice if you can afford one. I do not own one, about 60 dollars, but I have one on my list. You can use just plain old gemstone setting pliers, about 10 dollars, those are the ones I have. Be sure to watch both videos, and you can watch it as many times as you need, to get the procedure down. It does take a lot of practice, and is not as easy as they make it look. Start with inexpensive settings, and poor quality, or cheaper gemstones, in case you chip, crack, or otherwise break your materials. Most of all, have fun, and start making your own jewelry.
